The “PBR Bowl” may have just replaced the annual “Turkey Bowl” I attend each and every year. This is a true test of endurance.

I love that you have to have a beer in your hand at all times. I think all sports should be played that way.

NFL Week 1 Thoughts

I was so happy to finally have the NFL back on TV this past week.  Football, in all it’s wondrous glory, was back on TV.  This meant I could finally stop forcing myself to sit through baseball broadcasts and get back to enjoying the greatest sport around.  The season kicked off on Thursday night with a disappointing game between the Steelers and Titans.  It was poorly played and was definitely a letdown considering how good both teams were last year.  A 4th-quarter fumble sent the game into overtime where the team that won the coin-flip ended up winning the game. (surprise!)  Opening game of the 2009 season and we are already reminded of the stupidest idea this side of the Tom Brady Tuck Rule.  Note to the NFL: Change the rule to the college rules.  It’s much more exciting and way more entertaining.  Another rule that the NFL needs to look into is the “blackout rule” which is starting to be the big storyline this season.  Apparently there is this recession thing going on so people aren’t flocking to the stadiums anymore.  On top of that, you have teams like Buffalo and Detroit who are fielding mediocre teams and still charging full price to watch them lose.  We have increases in ticket prices combined with a decline in talent on the field and they are wondering why games aren’t selling out.  Meanwhile the league is still making a killing with TV contracts, endorsements and merchandise sales.  I don’t know why Jacksonville and San Diego aren’t selling out, but most of the other teams are suffering because of the product on the field.  What do they decide to do?  Blackout games so that the fans can’t watch their teams play.  They need to put some sort of hold on the “blackout rule” until the economy rebounds and the teams who are suffering get their acts together.  It’s not fair to the fans, you know those same ones who keep the NFL profitable year after year after year.

Fast forward to Sunday (or is it rewind at this point?) we see some of the future stars on display.  Mark Sanchez looked great.  Adrian Peterson showed the world that if he can stay healthy, the might end up being one of the best ever.  The Giants defense is healthy and terrifying.  Joe Flacco looks even better than last year and Matt Ryan and the Falcons got the week 1 win.  There were a bunch of good, young teams on display and all was right with the world.  Football was back and boy was it great!  What made it all even better was the ridiculous play at the end of the Bengals-Broncos game.  And who better to call that game than the always over-excited Gus Johnson?  Fantastic!  Opening weekend was off to a great start…then Monday night rolled around…

Everyone was predicting blowout wins for the Patriots and Chargers over the Bills and the Raiders.  The underdogs played well and both had the lead deep into the 4th quarter but managed to give away the win in excruciating fashion.  Both games were very exciting down to the end but there was one big problem during the Bills-Patriots game in particular.  It seemed that too many people were way too excited about this game.  I don’t know if it was the Tom Brady factor or what, but fans’ emotions were way too high.  It seemed that too many people put money on the Pats and too many Bills fans (I’m one of them) put their hopes on the Bills.  People were just too angry when it was over.  I was upset that the Bills lost, but I wasn’t thinking of exacting some sort of revenge for the loss.  Some deranged “fans” actually went to a player’s house and trashed his yard.  Really?  Way to overshadow a good weekend of football with a horrendously stupid move that gives fans everywhere (especially Bills’ fans) a bad name.  With all of the crazy things that have gone on in the last few years with NFL players, the last thing the fans should do is take it upon themselves and get involved with them directly.  You are a fan.  That’s it.  You do not have any real stake in “your” team no matter how hard you root for them.  Just like the idiot Cubs fan who showered a baseball player with beer to prevent a catch earlier this year.  No one should think it is their duty to get involved with the teams and the players, especially not to “motivate” their team by vandalizing their home.  Stay home.  Root for your team.  Celebrate the big win with a high-five and mourn the big loss with some dignity.  Remember.  Football is back!  It can’t be all that bad.

Finally, Aaron Maybin and the Buffalo Bills strike a deal.

It’s about freakin’ time!  The 11th overall pick in this year’s draft has finally agreed to terms with the Buffalo Bills.  The standout defensive end from Penn State was one of only three first-round picks who hadn’t signed up to this point (Andre Smith & Michael Crabtree remain unsigned at this time.)  Maybin’s holdout puts him in a tough position.  He has missed all of Training Camp plus two preseason games and now has to play catch-up.  The Bills are hoping that Maybin has kept in game shape and that he’ll be able to hit the ground running.  Maybin may not be much of a contributor for the first few weeks of the season but the faster he gets on the field and shows his stuff, the better off he and the Bills will be.

Plaxico Pleads Guilty - Gets 2-Year Sentence

Plaxico copped to what everyone knew he was: guilty.  He entered his plea today and got a 2-year sentence due to his plea bargain.  Wow.  I knew this was coming but it still shocks me how someone could just piss away a career like that.  Nice knowing you, Plax!

Done.

That’s the word that best describes the Buffalo Bills 2008 season hopes.  Done.  I wish it wasn’t so, but it’s time to face the facts.  If they don’t come up with some miraculous turnaround, there is no chance they make the playoffs.  They started the season on a tear but have dropped their last 4 games and they have looked horrible in those losses.  I hate to be so negative, but this team is in big trouble not just for this season but possibly long-term if something doesn’t change.

What changed from the beginning of the season until now?  Simple answer: the quarterback play.  I know that there are some injuries and that guys are playing banged-up, but the biggest difference on this team comes down to one guy: Trent Edwards.  Don’t get me wrong, I like this kid.  I think he will have a long career in this league as a good QB but he needs to recover from this stretch of crappy play like yesterday.  This guy went from being a patient quarterback with sniper-like accuracy to a scared kid who is afraid to throw the ball downfield.  I think the hit that he took in the Cardinals game has severely screwed up his head both literally and figuratively.  I know he came back and beat the Chargers two weeks after suffering that concussion, but I was at that game and he was a noticeably different player.  He wasn’t patient.  He was jittery and he seemed to have “happy feet” in the pocket.  Late in the Chargers game there was a play where he danced around in the pocket for a bit and then he took off and ran for a crucial 3rd down conversion.  The crowd went nuts.  Later that night ESPN played the clip with some commentary on how great a play it was.  Everyone was happy!  Not me…all I could say was “Oh no!”  What happened to the patient kid who thrived on short, accurate passes?  Why is he taking off like a wannabe mobile quarterback?  That’s not his game.  It never was and it never should be.  He was our Kurt Warner and now he was playing like Shaun Hill.  I apologize to you Shaun Hill fans out there, but that is not a compliment.

What bothers me most about this whole situation is the way that the coaching staff is handling it.  Coach Jauron and the team executives have to be scared silly when they sit back and look at this whole thing.  The hit that Edwards took was pretty vicious but was really that bad?  I don’t think so.  I think that this has less to do with Trent’s noggin than it does with the coaching staff’s refusal to revise the game plan a little to make him more comfortable.  Somebody needs to tell them that they have a world-class running back on their team and that they need to figure out ways to get guys like Lee Evans open.  This offense should not be relying on a 2nd-year quarterback.  The pressure should be on the shoulders of Marshawn Lynch, Lee Evans and Turk Schonert (Offensive Coordinator.)  Be creative!  Get the ball in the hands of your playmakers.  You saw exactly what Lynch was capable of doing on Monday night.  He threw the team on his back and carried them to what should have been a win.  Lee Evans won’t sit back and cry for the ball like T.O. does, but maybe we should take a page out of the Dallas playbook and move him around before the snap so it’s easier to get him the ball.  Obviously, something needs to be done.  This is a young team with a good defense and a roster full of promising young players.  If this slide continues it has to fall on the coaching staff.  They need to figure out something before it’s too late (which it may be already.)
